Ski Morse Farm Blog

Bigger, better, stronger, faster

You may recall the great melt of last January and the havoc it wreaked on certain Morse Farm ski trails. What a mess, eh? One trail developed 11 major puddles – Harry’s Heaven. It looked like hell. But there’s hope for a better future.

No, it’s not Barack Obama. It’s the Harry’s Heaven detour!

Yes, boys and girls, moms and dads it’s true. A higher, drier future awaits you. Harry’s now travels closer to Cummings and toward Tick’s place before heading back to the old Harry’s where it meets the VAST trail.

But wait, there’s more!

Frog Run will finally get its extension up and running. Last year the nearly continuous snowfall didn’t allow us to spend the time to groom there. The plan was to lead skiers to the open field overlooking the County and Center intersection. Now because of the generous offer by Steve Colangeli, the extension also heads west to his place where we believe we can create skate loops that are even better than West Wind Loop. His open land is protected from the wind. And it is remarkably clear of any obstacles.

We also fixed broken bridges, cleared the blow downs, and best of all got our equipment into the shop for pre-season maintenance. Somebody pinch me!

The Drip on Maple Loop died last spring. It failed the load stress test, which consisted of Mark Moore jumping on the middle of it. (Rest assured experts were on hand to ensure all safety measures were observed.) Last month me, Nat and Chip rebuilt The Drip. Yay!

And to recognize the growing sport of snow shoeing, I’ve re-routed the long trail onto the new MAMBA mountain bike trails, off of the ski trails, and around the pond on Sugar Loop. Look for more exciting climbs, drops, and scenery. The short loop will also get a scrubbing.

Finally, don’t forget the ski clinic Nov. 1, 8:30 a.m. with Liz Stephen. Visit the Onion River Sports web site to register.

Rebuilding for a Better Future
What a better way to start a new season than with an election slogan. And this is now lame duck session at Morse Farm - we've been busy building and repairing bridges, removing fallen trees, and clearing the path for a great season. This time we will be ready for the snow! Some highlights include re-routing Harry's Heaven to avoid the dozen or so swampy spots that popped last season; a new Drip bypass bridge on Maple Loop (the old one fell down during the summer storms); the extension of Frog Run (finally!); and new snowshoe routes that follow new MAMBA MTB singletrack built this spring. The corn is cut, the peeper buses are taping off so we can now focus on brush hogging, nipping, clipping, and clearing. We'll need some help over the rest of October and throughout November. Watch the blog for specific dates. Volunteers will be rewarded with special incentives for the coming season. Finally, we'll post information about a ski clinic very soon. It features local heroine Liz Stephen who conducted the very successful late-season clinic last season. Stay tuned skiers.
